Costco Trunk or Treat Idea

Sep 18, 2026

If you’re looking for a trunk-or-treat theme that’s easy to pull together, instantly recognizable, and a little unexpected, this Costco trunk or treat was such a fun one!

We did this theme last year and got so many compliments on it. My favorite part was turning the candy into Costco “samples”—because what’s a trip to Costco without stopping for a sample (or three)?

Here’s everything we did to bring it together.

The Costco Setup

I started with this Costco printable bundle from Etsy, which made creating the backdrop really easy. I printed several of the food court images, cut them out, and glued them onto a poster board to make our own mini Costco food court menu.

The bundle also included Costco-style price signs. I edited one of them to say “Halloween Candy – FREE” and slipped it into a clear acrylic picture frame for the candy table. Such a simple little detail, but it really helped sell the Costco sample setup!

For the table itself, I brought a folding table from home and covered it with a red fitted tablecloth. The bright Costco red immediately made everything feel more on-theme.

Costco Samples…But Make It Candy

This was probably my favorite part of the whole trunk!

Instead of simply putting out a bowl of Halloween candy, we handed it out like Costco samples. I placed individual pieces of candy in small white paper muffin liners and arranged them on a black cafeteria-style food tray.

It looked just like the little sample cups and trays you see while walking through Costco—and the kids (and parents) got such a kick out of picking up their own “sample.”

The Costco Employee Uniforms

Of course, we needed to look the part too!

We wore red aprons , red hats, and name tags to turn ourselves into Costco employees for the night. You could easily use red shirts you already own, but the aprons and hats were a fun addition and made the whole setup feel a little more complete.

Filling the Trunk

To make the back of our van actually look like Costco, I stocked it with some of the things you’d expect to see during a Costco run—big packages of paper towels, toilet paper, and other bulk items.

You definitely don’t need to buy a bunch of random things just for the display. This is a great time to use household staples you already have or things your family will use afterward. Stack everything in the trunk and suddenly your car starts looking like a tiny Costco warehouse.

The Life-Size Costco Membership Card

Last but definitely not least: the giant Costco membership card.

I purchased a separate printable designed to look like an oversized Costco membership card and had it printed large at Staples. Once I received it, I carefully used a box cutter to cut a square opening where the membership photo would normally go.

The kids could stand behind it and put their faces through the opening to make their very own giant “Costco membership card” photo.

It ended up being such a fun interactive element—and gave families something to do besides just grabbing candy.

What You Need

To recreate our Costco trunk or treat, here’s the basic shopping and supply list:

You can make this setup as simple or elaborate as you want. The little details—the sample cups, employee outfits, giant membership card, and bulk Costco products—are what really make the theme recognizable.

It was one of those Halloween ideas that was relatively simple to put together but made a big impact. And considering how many compliments we got on it last year, I’d say our little Costco was a hit!

Happy trunk-or-treating!
